Talladega and Spoiler II Values
According to Hagerty Valuation Guide
We regularly like to see what the pros think our cars are worth. The Hagerty Price Guide is published every quarter. I find their values more in tune with mine than some of the others. However, they have a major flaw as it relates to the Mercury Cyclone Spoiler and Spoiler II. For whatever reason, they are unable to understand what a Spoiler/Spoiler II really is. They only list a “428 CJ Spoiler II”. I think we both know that car never existed. They don’t list a Spoiler with a 351 or 390. They don’t list a Spoiler II without a 428 CJ and there is no “add on value” for Ram Air, Air Conditioning, or SCJ! So, this discredits their quality of valuations somewhat in my opinion.
The last time we did this was back in the first quarter of 2019.
Now, what is your car worth in February 2019? In the January-April Hagerty Pirce Guide for 2019 here is what they had to say:
1969 Ford Talladega values listed for the First Quarter 2019
- -Condition 4: $25,500
- -Condition 3: $43,700
- -Condition 2: $62,600
- -Condition 1: $80,300
1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II (whatever they think that is) values listed for the First Quarter 2019
- -Condition 4: $18,600
- -Condition 3: $30,300
- -Condition 2: $44,200
- -Condition 1: $60,600
I am not sure if anyone can predict what the current Coronavirus trauma is going to do short term or long term to the values of any collector car. There are lots of opinions but they are all that, just opinions. Only time will tell us who was right. The values provided here are for the 2020 First Quarter ending April 30, 2020. However, This really doesn’t tell the full story of what was going on once the virus got fired up.
1969 Ford Talladega values for First Quarter 2020:
- Condition 4: $29,700
- Condition 3: $50,800
- Condition 2: $72,800
- Condition 1: $93,500
A little additional information is beneficial at this point. If you go back and look at the same values for January and May you get a little different perspective.
1969 Ford Talladega values for January 2020:
- Condition 4: $30,000
- Condition 3: $51,000
- Condition 2: $72,500
- Condition 1: $95,000
1969 Ford Talladega values for May 2020:
- Condition 4: $27,000
- Condition 3: $46,000
- Condition 2: $67,000
- Condition 1: $86,000
Note that the values listed for January and May of 2020 are approximations because they were interpreted from Hagerty graphs rather than specific numbers provided in a table.
Now let’s take a look at what Hagerty has to say about the same information for the 1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II 428 CJ, that doesn’t exist. I will add that I compared these values to those of a similar Cyclone CJ with a 428 on their site and the CJ 428 was significantly less. The purpose of this comparison was to see if they are using the same values and they are not.
1969 Mercury Spoiler II 428 CJ values for First Quarter 2020 (these cars do not exist except in the mind of Hagerty!)
- Condition 4: $18,600
- Condition 3: $30,300
- Condition 2: $44,200
- Condition 1: $60,600
The values for these cars has been flat since the last report we did in January 2019. However, contrary to what happed to the Talladega, in May the value of these cars went up! See the numbers below.
1969 Mercury Spoiler II 428 CJ values for May 2020 (these cars do not exist except in the mind of Hagerty!)
- Condition 4: $22,000
- Condition 3: $35,000
- Condition 2: $51,500
- Condition 1: $70,000
This is a startling jump in values in a difficult time. Is it due to a sudden increase in buyer appreciation for these cars or is it due to Haggerty not knowing what the cars are and getting values mixed? If it is a Haggerty mistake I will be greatly disappointed. It should also be noted that the Haggerty values do not take into consideration whether the Spoiler II is a Cale Yarborough or a Dan Gurney. In my experience over the past couple of years, Dan Gurney Spoilers and Spoiler IIs are highly sought after and that could be impacting the values. Are Gurneys worth more than a comparable Cale? Leave your opinions in the Comments area below. We all want to know your opinions.
Can I join your group? I have a 1969 Cale car I’ve had over thirty years and never drove it. It’s in the shop.
Absolutely! Please Register your car on our web site. If you need help I will be happy to do so. There is no cost to register. However, if you want to enjoy all the benefits you can become a Team Member for dues of $20 per year.
Hi, I may have found a 69 cale yarbrough spoiler in a scrap yard here in the Wichita kansas area… 351 and 4 sp is gone. Body in pretty decent shape but complete minus the grille. Interior is probably 90% complete. What’s it worth? The guy thinks it’s worth $10,000 Thanks Bob.
Bob, With the limited information you provided it is impossible to give you a fair estimate of value. Check out our “What’s” it worth tab and you can see what Spoilers have been offered for sale for and sold for. You must be a Team Member to enter this page. Off hand, the price seems a little high but it really depends on the condition and completeness. The fact that it is (was) a 4 speed helps the value. You might want to invest into a Marti Report for further information and documentation before making an offer.
