Aero Wars Summary

Who Won by John Craft

Later this year, in September, many of us will gather for the Annual Aero Car Reunion. This year, we will host the event in Murfreesboro, TN. When the MOPAR and Blue Oval fans gather, eventually someone will proclaim that their brand started the Aero Wars or Won the Aero Wars. We will always debate the actual truth without an obvious answer. There are far too many variables to consider.

John Craft provided the following information by way of a Facebook post. John is arguably one of the top historians on the subject.

Both sides take strong positions based on brand loyalty. The casual observer often muddies the waters with hyperbole about “winged car domination”. NASCAR at the time, as today, consisted of short tracks and intermediate tracks where the cars’ aero had limited impact. Keep in mind that the Aero Wars were contested on super speedways (by definition, tracks of one mile or more in length). That’s where the headlines were garnered that would sell cars the following Monday. Short track wins at Maryville and Islip just didn’t cut the mustard in that regard. Some calculate the Aero Wars as having been contested 1968 through the end of the factory period in 1971 (Fomoco got out of NASCAR in 1970 and Mopar in 1971) while others want to limit the discussion to 1969 and 1970.

Here are the results for every super speedway race contested from 1968 through 1971. We report; you decide.

Richard

Some of my first and strongest memories from my childhood relate to cars. I still remember when things happened based on what car I was driving at the time. I grew up and lived in Iowa for nearly 40 years before moving to Southern California and now live in Tennessee. I was a Corvette fanatic for years but then re-discovered vintage American Muscle. My wife, Katrina, and I decided we wanted to focus on unique and rare muscle cars. After a lot of research we fell in love with the Ford Blue Oval Aero Cars. These were only built in 1969 and and aerodynamics became an important part of winning races. The only purpose of these limited production cars was to win NASCAR races using the Boss 429 and 427 power plants complimented with a special, wind cheating, aerodynamic body. The Ford Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II are terrific and historic cars. This site is devoted to these car and their owners past and present. We provide an Online Registry for recording the long term history and ownership of every remaining Talladega, Spoiler and Spoiler II.
