Aero Cars at Barrett Jackson 2015
A correction is needed. This Blue Talladega was mistakenly previously listed as the $110,000 from last year but it was not. The early photos on the BJ site showed the car from the previous year. They are different VINs. Sorry for any confusion.
Below are the photos for the car that did sell at BJ in 2015 for $35,000 plus premium.
The second Talladega going up for auction is a Maroon car that has had a complete restoration and appears to be mostly correct with the exception of missing smog equipment. However, as documented by the photo above, not all pictures tell the complete story of the car’s condition. Which car do you think will bring the most money and what will be the top selling price of the two?
I
It will be a big year for Aero Cars at the auction this year. The only car not represented is the 1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II. There will be two 1970 Plymouth Superbirds and one 1969 Dodge Daytona.
The Daytona is a very famous car once owned by Big Willie of Los Angeles street racing notoriety. The car has been restored and has been on tour around the Country the past year. It is a real Daytona with a very famous history. What is your guess on this one? I bet this car will bring more than twice the price of both Talladegas combined!

Of all
This Plymouth Superbird is listed as an all original 14,000 mile car and was the last one produced. The dealer did not sell it to a retail buyer until 1985! Although this is a 440 automatic car its condition and low miles could drive the price up substantially. What is your projection?
The last of the MOPARs is a 1970 Plymouth Superbird that is again a 440 automatic but is a fully restored car. Will having all these Aero Cars at the same auction help the prices for the sellers or the buyers? What do you think this Bird will sell for?
I have a couple of more questions. First, which of all these cars will bring the most money? The least? If there were comparable Dan Gurney and Cale Yarborough Spoiler II cars at this auction how do you think their prices would compare to these cars?
Richard,
I think the “Big” Daytona will bring the most money,
followed by the low milage Superbird.
The restored Superbird will follow, then the
less than perfect blue Talladega,
with the restored maroon Talladega bringing up the rear.
(I assume there was no Charger 500 in the mix, either.)
These are not my preferences, but, they do reflect what bids have looked like in the past. Wild sells, correct, not so much…
I would like to think that the collection (sort of) will bring more light to the aerocars in general, and perhaps will generate bigger numbers. However, since there are only so many bidders at any one auction looking for a specific car, it could actually hurt all of them. (I know, wishy washy prediction, there.) However, I will go with higher numbers if we have a big prize involved – I’m thinking an extra coffee mug at Kingsport?)
Regardless of the outcome, it is a very nice grouping for one auction.
I wish I could be there just to bid on the restored Maroon Talladega – alas, no money…
As I am in the middle of a concours Spoiler II restoration, I wonder what kind of money it would bring. You don’t see II’s for sale, let alone a driver and not a concours car. But on the flip side so few people even know what a Spoiler is, so it may not bring high dollars.
Chris, the auction may help give you some ideas. In my opinion, a Spoiler II even without the 428 CJ engine, should bring the same dollars as a similar condition Talladega. Sometimes these cars will even bring more. I have seen Spoilers bring money equal to a Talladega. I would suggest you take a look at our web site’s Selling and Sold page for a history of all the recent sales we have been able to locate.
Thank God for Ray Evernham! The talk he gave on the maroon Talladega before it crossed the block was at least respectful and accurate. Once on the block the regular announcers weren’t too bad though they messed up on the rear bumper and a little on the rockers. All in all no real complaints. $45K seemed about right for the car as it presented well based on the footage.
Of course the blue one was sold over a commercial break (at $35K!) so we have no idea what they did. Was Marty or anyone from the club at this event? I know Marty has seen the blue car in person before. I was curious to see if the last owner cleaned up the engine at all. Seemed like weak money even with the modifications made to the car.
Now I’m just hoping the white one does well on Saturday…
What do you expect, Ray Evernham owns a Talladega as does Bill Elliot!
I took a look at the photos of the blue car on the Barrett-Jackson website and discovered by VIN that this car was produced just a few ahead of mine. The interior and engine compartment were rough around the edges but assuming all the mechanicals work it’s probably a high #3 car (which is about where I estimate mine to be). Based on that I’d have to say the sale price was fair to even strong.
Oh, and since Bill Elliot is my favorite driver of all time I’m even more thrilled that he has his own T. I had also spotted a Spoiler II (Dan Gurney I think) in the background of one of Ray Evernham’s Americarna shows.
