Not a Spoiler

This is NOT a Spoiler.
This is NOT a Spoiler.

Over the past few days I have received several emails from readers about a car that is currently on eBay for sale as a Cale Yarborough Spoiler. Included in the photos is a copy of a Registration Certificate for the car signed by me. The car is listed as having been built a month prior to the production of the Spoilers. This car has been for sale previously on eBay as well as at a Mecum Auction were it was advertised and sold as a Spoiler.

I have never seen this car in person. It is being miss represented! It is not a Spoiler. It was miss registered by me due to information supplied by the owner. No one has a complete list of all the VINs for the Spoilers. I was told it was an early production Spoiler and Registered it. At the time, it would have been the earliest know Spoiler and we had no date code information for that sequence of numbers. Once I received the Marti Report for the car it was clear the car is a Pre-Spoiler/Color Code car. The owner has been told this but keeps representing it as a Spoiler. As stated before, it was even sold at a Mecum auction as a Spoiler. I also informed the Mecum Auction that it was not a Spoiler prior to the auction.

You can read more about the car on our web site as well as in the Forum Thread. It appears to be a very nice car, just not a real Spoiler. Pre-Spoiler/Color Code cars often command a similar price range as a Spoiler. It is a shame the seller does not accurately describe the car. Personally, I would discount a Pre-Spoiler/Color Code car values by 10% to 20% less than a Spoiler but that is just me.

As for the wing/spoiler on the trunk, it is incorrect for a Pre-Spoiler/Color Code car. The Cale Yarborough decals and numerous other items are also a dead give a ways that this car is not a Spoiler.

The seller does say “do your own research” and this is good advice for anyone contemplating a purchase but it is no excuse to continue to mislead others when you have the correct information.

Some of my first and strongest memories from my childhood relate to cars. I still remember when things happened based on what car I was driving at the time. I grew up and lived in Iowa for nearly 40 years before moving to Southern California and now live in Tennessee. I was a Corvette fanatic for years but then re-discovered vintage American Muscle. My wife, Katrina, and I decided we wanted to focus on unique and rare muscle cars. After a lot of research we fell in love with the Ford Blue Oval Aero Cars. These were only built in 1969 and and aerodynamics became an important part of winning races. The only purpose of these limited production cars was to win NASCAR races using the Boss 429 and 427 power plants complimented with a special, wind cheating, aerodynamic body. The Ford Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II are terrific and historic cars. This site is devoted to these car and their owners past and present. We provide an Online Registry for recording the long term history and ownership of every remaining Talladega, Spoiler and Spoiler II.

  1. Even though this is a Color Code car in Spoiler’s clothing, it is still a big block, 4-speed Cyclone at what I would consider a reasonable cost so far. ($16K with reserve off at this point on eBay).
I agree that I don’t want to see cars misrepresented as something overly special when they are not. The seller seems to have backed away from the argument (and rightly so) and simply states that the buyer should make sure this is the car they want before bidding. It is tough, but I can’t say I have a big problem with it. After first seeing the auction I immediately came to the Registry to see if it was in the Spoiler list.
Even as a Color Code car it looks in good condition and is probably a blast to drive. I wish the seller and all the prospective buyers good luck.

    1. Mark, I absolutely agree that at $16,000 this is an excellent buy on a Color Code car. My reservation is that once a seller clearly misrepresents or suggests the car maybe something it isn’t makes me wonder about other claims/statements made about the car.

  2. Agreed. As someone who has been bit (on a much smaller scale) with parts that were claimed to be NOS and then turned out to be aftermarket or counterfeit parts it can be very frustrating to be in the losing side of a deal. With a car it must be even worse. Research when buying anything is invaluable. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.
