Since our original Update we have continued to get more information on the Blue Talladega that sold at Barrett Jackson Auction for $110,000 (with buyer’s premium) on a Tuesday night. Here is what the owner, Nolan Clinard had to say:
“Thanks, Richard, for your cordial email about the Talladega auction at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale on Tuesday last, that produced a $100,000.00 sale for the beautiful blue Ford. My ownership of the car ended in October when I sold it to a buyer/seller/trader of classic cars in Kentucky, whose plans were to enter it at Scottsdale from the git-go. Good plan, as it turned out. I’m sure all of the owners of such cars realize what a multi-faceted dynamic an auction is, and so many factors affect the outcome. For instance the bid stalled around $30,000 (I was told, as I missed the TV, cause I was watching Justified at the time) and a B-J pep talk got it rolling again. I am gratified that I had a small part in bringing attention to the marque, and I’ll never forget the richness of this special winner on the track and off. Sincerely, Nolan Clinard”
Next up is what one observer at the auction had to add and I believe his comment reflects what many of us feel:
“I went an looked at the blue one at Barrett Jackson today. Nice car, glad to see these getting some price traction. Don’t understand why they are up with the Mopars, maybe getting there soon.”
This comment is from the owner, David Payne, whose completely restored maroon Talladega is going up for auction at Mecum Kissimmee on Saturday. Please note that none of us are saying that the car that sold was “not a great car” but it is not an accurate 100 point restoration.
“I’m on the road, taking the Talladega to Florida. Your support is appreciated. I did see the B J sale and understand it was not a great car. We restored our car as original along with its 2 build sheets I got a Martin Report and verified the engine numbers as matching. The car turned out great. I hope the B J results drive our car to a reasonable price. These cars have been under valued for the rare cars they are and the success they had in NASCAR.”

I was there. It did stall for a bit at 35K. The “pep talk” was nothing special. They just basically read some of the features of the car. Gary Bennett mentioned the car was worth twice what the current bid was. It started to move after that then just took off. Two guys were just going back and forth until one guy hit 100K mark. .
I don’t think it was anything that was said, it was just two bidders who wanted the car. A Barrett-Jackson home run for sure.
