What’s up with 1969 Color Code Cars?
The Color Code Cyclones are also referred to as the “Pre-Spoiler”. To the inexperienced, they appear to be Cale Yarborough Spoilers. There are several differences to tell them apart. The surest way is to get a Marti Report but the next best bet is the Data Plate found on the driver’s door.
All red and white Color Code Cars were built prior to January 1, 1969. On the Data Plate, the location for paint will be blank whereas on a Cale Yarborough Spoiler the designation will be “MT”. Just because the space is blank does not mean it is a Pre-Spoiler Color Code Car. When the space is blank it means the car got a special paint job at the factory. That could mean it got a color that was not standard for the Cyclone, it does not mean it got the red/white Cale colors. That is why the Marti Report is so important.
There were, as far as we know, no blue and white Color Code Cars ever built. We are also not sure when the very first Color Code Car in red and white was built. All Cale Yarborough Spoilers were built after January 1, 1969.
A Color Code Car will also differ from the Spoilers in that no original car will have the rear wing, hood scoop (unless it is a 428 CJ Ram Air) or “Cale Yarborough, Dan Gurney or Spoiler” decals. They were merely Cyclones with special paint. Therefore any engine or option available in a Cyclone could be had in a Color Code Car. A very high percentage of the cars built at the end of the year in December 1968 seems to have had 428 CJ engines.
We do not have all the VINs for the Color Code Cars nor we know that total production of cars.
As of our most recent count in January of 2020, we had a total of 11 Color Code Cars registered and confirmed (Marty Reports). We have VINs for 29 cars we think are Color Code but they have not been confirmed with Marti Reports.
Of the 11 confirmed cars that are Registered the conditions reported with #1 being the best and #6 being a part car here are the results.
