Ford Talladega

First Talladega 500, Part 2

Daytona at Talladega

Previously, we looked at the inaugural Talladega 500 Superspeedway Program and what Ford had to say about its new Talladega Aero Car. The author spoke of Ford’s long list of achievements on the racetracks of America over recent years. Special attention was given to the accomplishments of the new Talladega and NASCAR Champion, David Pearson. One statistic of particular interest and pride was a listing of all the Major Race Wins by the Talladega up to that time in 1969. These included:

With this being said and knowing that Dodge was going to bring out its 1969 Dodge Daytona at Talladega for the first time, what do you think they had to say about their new Aero Car? The first time I read this article, I could not believe what I was reading. There are no words talking about past achievements, no bragging, and no pictures (in this article).

Here is what Dodge had to say: it is all promises and what will be, not what we have done! Oh, and a couple of pictures.

The Dodge Daytona did win the race, but the field was full of non-NASCAR regulars and mostly smaller Camaro and Mustang race cars that ran the day before in the lower division. Here is a video that will give you a better idea of how inferior the field was. 32 of the regular drivers and cars refused to race and went home before the 500!

Some of my first and strongest memories from my childhood relate to cars. I still remember when things happened based on what car I was driving at the time. I grew up and lived in Iowa for nearly 40 years before moving to Southern California and now live in Tennessee. I was a Corvette fanatic for years but then re-discovered vintage American Muscle. My wife, Katrina, and I decided we wanted to focus on unique and rare muscle cars. After a lot of research we fell in love with the Ford Blue Oval Aero Cars. These were only built in 1969 and and aerodynamics became an important part of winning races. The only purpose of these limited production cars was to win NASCAR races using the Boss 429 and 427 power plants complimented with a special, wind cheating, aerodynamic body. The Ford Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II are terrific and historic cars. This site is devoted to these car and their owners past and present. We provide an Online Registry for recording the long term history and ownership of every remaining Talladega, Spoiler and Spoiler II.
