NEVER LOST, BUT FOUND; Unknown Talladega Surfaces….Now What?

If you have been reading our Forum Threads you may have noticed recent conversations regarding a “Gap” Talladega being discovered. What is a “Gap” Talladega? I will try to be as brief as possible.

When you go to our Master List of Talladega VINs you will notice that there are locations in the list that say “Not a T”. These notations signify a brief “gap” in the run of VINs that were not Talladegas. Remember, the Talladegas were built in batches over a short period of time and not in one continuous line. Up until now these gaps were all believed to be the VIN of some regular Fairlane/Torino.

However, Dana Rathbun spoke out on the Forum that he had a Talladega with one of the Gap car VINs! Skeptical to say the least, he was challenged to produce a Marti Report or some similar documentation and that he did!

I have a copy of the Marti Report and it looks like any other Talladega Marti Report.

Are there more Gap cars out there? What does this mean to the total production count of Talladegas and there are many more questions. Today, we will provide no answers but over the next few weeks and months we will be working with others of you in an attempt to put this all into historical perspective. Maybe this previously unknown car will upset previous beliefs or maybe it will clear some muddy facts. What ever the case we will keep you posted.

If you have any thoughts of your own; if you know of another Gap Talladega; if you have information that will help please feel free to send it along to me at rfleener@comcast.net or jump into the ongoing discussion in our Forum.

Some of my first and strongest memories from my childhood relate to cars. I still remember when things happened based on what car I was driving at the time. I grew up and lived in Iowa for nearly 40 years before moving to Southern California and now live in Tennessee. I was a Corvette fanatic for years but then re-discovered vintage American Muscle. My wife, Katrina, and I decided we wanted to focus on unique and rare muscle cars. After a lot of research we fell in love with the Ford Blue Oval Aero Cars. These were only built in 1969 and and aerodynamics became an important part of winning races. The only purpose of these limited production cars was to win NASCAR races using the Boss 429 and 427 power plants complimented with a special, wind cheating, aerodynamic body. The Ford Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II are terrific and historic cars. This site is devoted to these car and their owners past and present. We provide an Online Registry for recording the long term history and ownership of every remaining Talladega, Spoiler and Spoiler II.
