GT 500 Discovered

We don’t talk much about the 1968 Cyclone GT 500 because we know so little and there just aren’t any around. However, we recently received an email from K. Peppers with some information and photos that we thought deserved a little special attention. If you want to know more about these cars we have listed as much as we know on this site and even register them here.

This car is not for sale so don’t ask.

Peppers states that he is restoring the GT 500 for his cousin whose father bought it new. He┬áhasn’t started on the restoration yet and based on these photos I think he should keep it original un-restored. What do you think? He is going to get a Marti Report before doing anything.

Some of my first and strongest memories from my childhood relate to cars. I still remember when things happened based on what car I was driving at the time. I grew up and lived in Iowa for nearly 40 years before moving to Southern California and now live in Tennessee. I was a Corvette fanatic for years but then re-discovered vintage American Muscle. My wife, Katrina, and I decided we wanted to focus on unique and rare muscle cars. After a lot of research we fell in love with the Ford Blue Oval Aero Cars. These were only built in 1969 and and aerodynamics became an important part of winning races. The only purpose of these limited production cars was to win NASCAR races using the Boss 429 and 427 power plants complimented with a special, wind cheating, aerodynamic body. The Ford Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II are terrific and historic cars. This site is devoted to these car and their owners past and present. We provide an Online Registry for recording the long term history and ownership of every remaining Talladega, Spoiler and Spoiler II.

  3. The car is owned by my cousin I am temporarily storing it for him. His dad bought it new in May of 68 at Ferrell L/M in Decatur Ga. It is a 302 2 Barrel car. It has hardly been driven since his dad died in 85. It was always garage kept. I took these pictures a couple of weeks ago. He bought the 71 Comet GT in the background new then sold it to me in 91. It is kinda neat having these two cars in the same garage. The Marti report on the Comet states that it is one of five. It also has the dealer installed “stabber” package which is rare. We just sent for the Marti on the Cyclone.

  4. By the way it’s a C4 auto and 80,000 miles. I have put it on a lift. It needs a front end rebuild. The tires in the pictures are from the early eighties and had to be replaced before I could drive it. My cousin (Ronnie) opted for a set of BFG’s w/new Torque Thrust D’s. They look perfect on the car. The original wheels and covers were put in storage. The car drives great no rattles or sqeaks; rides buttery smooth. Unfortunatly it is painfully slow.
