1970 King Cobra For Sale

Only three King Cobra Prototypes were built by Ford. Only one had a 4-speed and only one had the convex rear window. This car is going to auction on May 19, 213 at the Mecum Indy Auction. I can only imagine what this car might sell for but I am also afraid that like the Talladega and Spoiler/Spoiler II it is difficult at times to get two people who know what these cars are in the same auction at the sametime.

This rear view says it all.

Bench seat in a car like this tells you what Ford was thinking. Just like the Talladega and Spoiler II it was intended to be a race car and not a daily driver.

Now that is a pretty site! Wish my Dega had one of those.

These cars look so much better with the headlight covers in place. Seems like for maximum aero benefit there would should be a clear lens over the turn signal/parking lights.

I think this is my favorite color for the car and love the wheels. Ever see a Talladega with these wheels on it; makes a completely different car out of it.

Note how the “C” stripe runs on this car and where it is located on the yellow car.

Yellow King Cobra; note the different wheels and "C" Stripe, also lack of headlight covers.

Some of my first and strongest memories from my childhood relate to cars. I still remember when things happened based on what car I was driving at the time. I grew up and lived in Iowa for nearly 40 years before moving to Southern California and now live in Tennessee. I was a Corvette fanatic for years but then re-discovered vintage American Muscle. My wife, Katrina, and I decided we wanted to focus on unique and rare muscle cars. After a lot of research we fell in love with the Ford Blue Oval Aero Cars. These were only built in 1969 and and aerodynamics became an important part of winning races. The only purpose of these limited production cars was to win NASCAR races using the Boss 429 and 427 power plants complimented with a special, wind cheating, aerodynamic body. The Ford Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II are terrific and historic cars. This site is devoted to these car and their owners past and present. We provide an Online Registry for recording the long term history and ownership of every remaining Talladega, Spoiler and Spoiler II.

  1. Two King Cobras were built by Ford. Bud Moore bought both. There may have been a third Ford built car based on archival photos. But that car has never turned up. The third existing King Cobra , as the story goes, was built at Holman Moody from parts.

  2. John,
I was checking in to see what’s cooking and here you are. I hope you guys are well, say hello to Mark and the bunch. I also have many un opened Talladega models from monogram that you can have for shipping if interested. These were the first ones after Monogram called me to ask where to find one to shoot. As you know I pointed them to Mike Atkins.
    Thanks Buddy!
