If I remember correctly, that last time we checked in with Lou and Erin Whitfield, Lou was finishing up their Dan Gurney short nose and the two of them were planning on attending the Reunion in Talladega. Obviously, that didn’t happen since there was no Talladega event. I thought you might want to take a closer look at the three Mercs that Low and Erin own. In our last article you saw some beautiful non-original Talladega and Spoiler II Rancheros by John McCloud. Lou is equally adapt at modifications.

The first is the 351 powered Dan Gurney Spoiler which we followed Lou as he hauled it home some 5 years or more ago. It was sound but in need of a complete restoration.

The Gurney features some cougar wheels and a Nascar style spoiler under the front bumper.

Yep, it is a 351 under the hood of the Dan Gurney Spoiler. You can see Lou's handy work in the air cleaner and suspension reinforcement.

Spend some time looking at this image and see how many non-stock improvement Lou has built/added.

Lou and Erin build their cars to be driven and you will always find the cup holders to prove it.

The second car is the oldest in his collection. We have seen this one in a couple of configurations and some day we will surprise you and Lou with some more photos of it. This is a Spoiler II clone but built with a real Spoiler II front end. It has Lee Roy Yarbrough stripes. At one time it had the full Nascar number and decal package on it!

The third car in the Whitfield garage is a 1969 Mercury Cougar with 351 and factory air just like the other two. In Southern California air conditioning is not an option if you want to drive your collector car in the summer.

Lou says the color is not red but more of an orange or rust color.

Richard

Some of my first and strongest memories from my childhood relate to cars. I still remember when things happened based on what car I was driving at the time. I grew up and lived in Iowa for nearly 40 years before moving to Southern California and now live in Tennessee. I was a Corvette fanatic for years but then re-discovered vintage American Muscle. My wife, Katrina, and I decided we wanted to focus on unique and rare muscle cars. After a lot of research we fell in love with the Ford Blue Oval Aero Cars. These were only built in 1969 and and aerodynamics became an important part of winning races. The only purpose of these limited production cars was to win NASCAR races using the Boss 429 and 427 power plants complimented with a special, wind cheating, aerodynamic body. The Ford Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II are terrific and historic cars. This site is devoted to these car and their owners past and present. We provide an Online Registry for recording the long term history and ownership of every remaining Talladega, Spoiler and Spoiler II.
