Auction Update

Well, the first round is over and two more have been added. On Wednesday night the Maroon Talladega sold for a respectable $45,000 plus commission and the Blue one sold for $35,000 plus commission. This car was mistakenly previously listed as the $110,000 from last year but it was not. The early photos on the BJ site showed the car from the previous year. They are different VINs. Sorry for any confusion.
However, we now have a Full House of Aero Cars going to auction this week. In addition to the cars at BJ in Scottsdale there is another Talladega and a Spoiler II going to auction at Mecum Kissimmee, FL. Also being auctioned are two more Daytonas and a Superbird. Here is the Mecum run down on their offerings.
Lot K252 will be sold on Saturday January 17, 2015. It it listed as being a 69,200 mile original Talladega that has had the same owner for 20 years. The engine has never been apart and the mufflers are original!

Lot T135 is a 1969 Mercury Cyclone Dan Gurney Spoiler II. It is listed in our Registry as #21, 9H15M563977. It has previously been offered for sale by the owner for $44,000 and the price was reduced to $38,500. It is reported to be a full restoration and low miles.
Lot F180 is the Feature Car at Mecum Kissimmee. It is from the Tim Wellborn collection; a 1969 Dodge Daytona Hemi 4-speed! It is copper in color, very rare and is estimated to sell for $800,000-$1,000,000. Oh, and it only has 6,435 miles with a complete 1,000 point quality restoration.

Lot F191 is another Daytona from Tim’s collection. This one is a special 999 paint code, Omaha Orange. It is “only a 440 4-speed” but is an exceptional restoration and extremely rare. In the Daytona world a rare color is almost has good as a Hemi or 4-speed. This one is expected to sell for $225,000-$275,000.

Lot F283 is a 1969 Dodge Charger 500 which many compare to the Talladega as being similar in body modifications. Both are much more conservative in appearance than the Daytona and Superbird. Most Ford guys think that a fair comparison in value between the Talladega and Spoiler II with the 500 is more appropriate than against the two winged cars. This car is a good color and is a 440 automatic.

Th final aero car at Mecum is Lot 5132 a 1970 Plymouth Superbird. It is a 440 six pack with automatic on the column and bench seat. It is estimated to sell for $150,000-$175,000.

Well, both the Maroon Talladega and the Dan Gurney Spoiler II sold for $33K at Mecum. I think we can all agree that the quality of the Mecum broadcast since moving from Velocity to NBCSN leaves something to be desired (I will use my Disney language here!). Between limited days and hours of broadcast (as compared to the old days) there was no chance to see these cars cross the block and see how well (or unwell) they were promoted. The two Daytonas sold on Friday did well ($900K & $280K respectively) but the Superbird failed to sell at $140K. The Charger 500 sold for $66K which I thought was very interesting.
I think the worst part of the new format of Mecum is that Scott Hoke and John Kramen have to shill NHL hockey and the Barclay world league of soccer!
