Belated Happy Birthday

The following was submitted by the owner, Mike Callahan. You may recognize the car if you are a regular here.

I was born March 14th 1969 in Loran Ohio and named Dan after a great racing legend. My first, of many, cross country trips came early as I was transported to Downey California. I spent my first 45 years in that area and ended up back in Ohio!  While in California my drivetrain was upgraded and color changed several times. I started out painted blue and white, then pink, and finally black. I have lived a glamorous life being featured in magazines and online. I have driven the beautiful backroads of America on the Hot Rod Power Tour and cruised Woodward Avenue. I have traveled to shows in Chicago, Carlisle and Florida. My NASCAR heritage has got me to Talladega and I have even raced on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Happy birthday to Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II 9H15M564994.

This photo was taken at a Fabulous Fords Forever Show at Knott’s Berry Farm in California in approximately 2004. Our Dan Gurney can be seen to the left in the image. The car was originally built by Lou and Erin Whitfield but was not owned by them at that time.

Some of my first and strongest memories from my childhood relate to cars. I still remember when things happened based on what car I was driving at the time. I grew up and lived in Iowa for nearly 40 years before moving to Southern California and now live in Tennessee. I was a Corvette fanatic for years but then re-discovered vintage American Muscle. My wife, Katrina, and I decided we wanted to focus on unique and rare muscle cars. After a lot of research we fell in love with the Ford Blue Oval Aero Cars. These were only built in 1969 and and aerodynamics became an important part of winning races. The only purpose of these limited production cars was to win NASCAR races using the Boss 429 and 427 power plants complimented with a special, wind cheating, aerodynamic body. The Ford Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II are terrific and historic cars. This site is devoted to these car and their owners past and present. We provide an Online Registry for recording the long term history and ownership of every remaining Talladega, Spoiler and Spoiler II.
