Mercury Competition Team 1969

Are you or were you a Member of the Mercury Competition Team back in 1969?

Did you know Mercury had a Competition Team in 1969? I sure didn’t but thanks to helpful supporter and Mercury/Ford fan I do now! Michael J. Beckelman, Vice-President of the Hirsig-Frazier Company contacted me and provided the pamphlets and application we are sharing with you today.

However, first off let’s look at the 1969 sales brochure Michael also provided. These are photos of the actual Mercury brochure. Michael’s uncle was into high performance Fords and Mercurys back in the day and the dealer thought he should have these items.

I have a photo copy of one these and many of you might also have seen one but I have never seen an original. This one is very different and raises an interesting question. Let’s see if you spot it.

The paper color is very different from the copies and this original has color photos!

This is the sales brochure that the dealer had to help sell the new Spoilers. On the left is the Dan Gurney Special and on the right is the Cale Yarborough Special. How many of you noticed that the Cale car has a RED SPOILER? This is the first Mercury documentation I have seen with spoilers painted body color. My wife and I have an original Gurney car with a Blue Spoiler and I have seen one other as well as one Cale car with a Red spoiler. Were dealers supposed to paint them body color or leave them in the original black plastic color? Were some dealers cheap and just didn’t want to paint them? Or was it simply up to the buyer it sure would be fun to hear from anyone who might know for sure.

The second set of documents Michael provided are for the Mercury Competition Team. This document seems to be directed at not only the Cyclone but specifically drag racing your Cyclone.

Wish I had a stack of these!

You could purchase a race jacket for $6.50! I will take a dozen if you can still find them at this price.

This is the Mercury provided drag race win log book. It must be a win at a licensed strip...no street racing. You can but it won't count...my comment.

I went out on a limb and had some of these Cyclone decals reproduced; how many of you would like to have one or more? I will post a copy and cost as soon as I have a final version. Ford also had a similar one but I can’t find one of those, do you have one I can borrow? Would you like a reproduction of it or some other decal/sticker if we can find them? Let me know at RFleener@Comcast.net

Some of my first and strongest memories from my childhood relate to cars. I still remember when things happened based on what car I was driving at the time. I grew up and lived in Iowa for nearly 40 years before moving to Southern California and now live in Tennessee. I was a Corvette fanatic for years but then re-discovered vintage American Muscle. My wife, Katrina, and I decided we wanted to focus on unique and rare muscle cars. After a lot of research we fell in love with the Ford Blue Oval Aero Cars. These were only built in 1969 and and aerodynamics became an important part of winning races. The only purpose of these limited production cars was to win NASCAR races using the Boss 429 and 427 power plants complimented with a special, wind cheating, aerodynamic body. The Ford Talladega and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II are terrific and historic cars. This site is devoted to these car and their owners past and present. We provide an Online Registry for recording the long term history and ownership of every remaining Talladega, Spoiler and Spoiler II.
