Fun at Atlanta and Talladega

If you missed our Talladega Family Reunion with the Fairlane Club of America in June of this year and you didn’t get to pretend to be David Pearson on the high banks of Bristol Motor Speedway you might want to try this next event out!
In conjunction with the Talladega Reunion this fall there will be a special “HOT LAP” opportunity at the Atlanta Speedway on Thursday! As I understand it at this time, Hot Rod Magazine will be caravanning out to Atlanta with a group of California Aero Car folks. Hot Rod will be doing a photo shoot and story. They will have a Superbird dressed out as a Pace Car for a bunch of real and clone race cars plus all the street cars. Both Fords and Mopars are welcome. Right now they are short on Fords and really want to see a bigger turn out from our side. There are even more surprises in the works. I really hope each of you can make it with your Ford/Mercury car! If all goes well, Katrina and I will be there with two cars, one will surprise you! The Thursday event at the Atlanta Speedway will cost $10 per car. We will meet at the track souvenir shop at 7:45, collect the cash, sign waivers and head around the west entrance tunnel. Then it is on to the track. After the track event there will be a ride south to Warm Springs, do a tour of the Roosevelt’s Little White House, eat lunch and finish the trip into Alexander City. If you have any questions about this call Chris Street at 770-401-6542 or email to hemibird@mindspring.com. For the 1969/70 Ford and Mopar Aero Car enthusiasts the biggest event of the Century could very well be this October 22nd – 25th in Alabama. Tim Wellborn and his Muscle Car Museum will be the host for a once in a lifetime event. Your participation would be greatly appreciated and the rest of us lowly mortals would be honored with your attendance. Tim has asked that our online Talladega Spoiler Registry reach out to as many Ford designers, engineers, race car drivers, team owners and anyone else related to the Ford racing efforts in and around 1969. This is not limited to just NASCAR but also includes other forms or racing including drag racing and sports cars. Obviously the emphasis is going to be on NASCAR racing from 1968, 1969 and 1970.
There is already a large group of historical MOPAR veterans lined up but we are thin on Ford heroes. Consider this your special invitation to be one of our heroes at this event. The preliminary activities are as follows.
October 22nd through October 25th we’re having a reunion!
Thursday Morning: Hot Laps at Atlanta Motor Speedway! See details above.
Afternoon/Friday Morning: Check in at the Museum (There will also be a track cruise at the Atlanta Motor Speedway early on Thursday for those interested.)
Friday Evening: There will be a show at the Wellborn home in the afternoon. For the evening festivities there will be a Louisiana Cajun style shrimp and crawfish boil dinner by a very special chef from New Orleans.
Saturday Morning through afternoon: A special show at the Wellborn Muscle With a dinner prepared by Chef Tim Creehan. (This is when there will be special activities and our Ford and Mopar heroes will be put front and center. Specific activities yet to be determined.) Later in the evening will be the Halloween themed party, 60’s and 70’s style.
Saturday Evening: There will be a Southern Style dinner at the Museum that has a Halloween theme. So you can dress up as someone from the muscle car era.
Sunday morning will be an early ride to the track. Some of you will bring trailers. Some will drive. The track will give the cars secured parking, possibly over by the museum. Parade lap in the morning before the race. The track will have a block of tickets available after the spring race in May. They would encourage as many of us to stay for the race as possible.
You are invited to participate in as much or as little of the weekend festivities as you desire. We certainly hope you will be available for all activities.
You must Register online at the Wellborn Muscle Car Museum, the cost is $130 per couple or $65 for a single; Click here and go to Events.
The Museum is located at: 124 Broad Street Alexander City, AL 3501 256-329-8474
